AI writing tools can save a lot of time, but they are not all the same. Some are mainly writers. Others are now large content platforms with SEO tools, brand features, AI assistants, social media tools, and automation.
I made this guide to help you choose without relying only on feature lists. I test AI tools with real tasks while building AIContent-Tools.com. I save the prompts, outputs, screenshots, useful results, and the things that do not work as expected.
Some tools on this page have now gone through much deeper testing than others. Jasper, Frase, Simplified, and Scalenut have some of my newest hands-on tests. Older reviews such as Writesonic and Rytr are still included because they are useful parts of this comparison, and I will update those tests too.
My quick answer
There is no single AI writing tool I would recommend to everyone. If you are a beginner, start by looking at Rytr or Simplified. If SEO is the main goal, compare Frase, Scalenut, and Writesonic. For larger marketing workflows, Jasper is one of the most interesting platforms I tested.

A feature list can tell me what a company says its product can do. It cannot tell me what happens when I actually use it.
That is why the newer reviews on AIContent-Tools.com are built around real testing. I enter prompts, generate content, try features, save screenshots, and look at the output. When something fails, I keep that result too.
For example, my Jasper testing now covers specialized AI agents and marketing workflows. My Frase testing includes writing, optimization, AI visibility, and site tools. With Simplified, I found useful features but also real reliability problems. Scalenut testing showed me that the platform is much more focused on SEO workflows than simple casual writing.

How I test AI writing tools
My testing has become more detailed as AI tools have become more complicated. I still look at writing quality, price, ease of use, and editing. But I also test the features that make each platform different.
- Real tasks: I use normal writing, marketing, SEO, and content tasks instead of only reading the product page.
- Content quality: Does the output sound useful, specific, and natural?
- Ease of use: Can a beginner understand what to do next?
- SEO usefulness: Does the platform help with research, briefs, optimization, or content planning?
- Special features: I test important tools such as Brand Voice, agents, humanizers, AI visibility, and automation when available.
- Failures: Broken outputs and disappointing results stay in the review.
- Editing needed: I look at how much work is still needed before I would publish the content.
- Value: A large feature list does not automatically mean a tool is worth paying for.

My honest notes on each tool
1. Jasper
Best for marketing workflowsJasper has changed a lot from the simple AI writer many people remember. In my recent testing, I spent much more time with specialized marketing agents, Brand Voice, rewriting tools, social content, product descriptions, landing pages, and other workflow-based features.
Jasper can be very useful when the task matches the workflow. I also found that not every agent or generated output is equally strong. That is why my Jasper review keeps both the useful results and weaker examples instead of showing only the best generations.

It can feel expensive and excessive if you only need a basic writing assistant.
2. Frase
Best for SEO-focused contentFrase surprised me because it feels less like a normal AI writer and more like a content and SEO workspace. My recent testing went beyond generating a paragraph. I tested writing, optimization, content improvement, Brand Voice, Site Audit, and AI visibility features.
Frase makes the most sense when SEO research and optimization are part of the writing process. Some features are much more useful for website owners than for someone who only wants quick social posts or short copy.

3. Simplified
Best all-in-one creator platformSimplified is difficult to judge as only an AI writing tool because it now includes much more: AI writing, Riley, social media features, Brand Brain, design tools, and automation. That makes it interesting for creators and small businesses that want several content tasks in one place.
The results were mixed. I found useful workflows, but I also saw real reliability problems. Two Instant Blog generations missed paragraphs. Riley returned an HTTP 403 error during one test, and my automation testing also produced unusable results. These problems are included in the full review because they matter when deciding whether to pay for the platform.

4. Scalenut
Best for structured SEO workflowsMy newer Scalenut testing changed how I look at this platform. It is not a tool I would describe mainly as a simple AI writer. A large part of the experience is built around SEO research, planning, optimization, visibility, and structured content workflows.
Scalenut gives you many SEO and analysis options, but this can also feel like a lot when you first open the platform. I found the newer tools more interesting for serious content work than for someone who only wants to open a chat and quickly write a short post.

5. Writesonic
Good for fast draftsWritesonic is a strong choice if you want blog posts, product copy, landing pages, and general marketing text. I like it for speed, but I would still edit every draft before publishing.

The text can still sound generic if you publish it without editing.
6. Rytr
Simple budget optionRytr is easy to start with. It is not the most advanced platform in this list, but that can be useful if large SEO dashboards and marketing systems feel like too much.
Simple, fast, and easier to learn than many larger platforms.
Not my first choice for a deep SEO workflow or complex content strategy.
7. Grammarly Pro
Best for editingGrammarly Pro is different from most tools above. I see it more as an editing and polishing tool than my main AI article writer. It makes more sense after you already have a draft.
Useful for grammar, clarity, tone, and final editing.
It is not a replacement for a full SEO content platform.

AI writing tools are becoming much more than writers
This became very clear during my newer tests. The category “AI writing tool” is starting to become too simple.
Jasper now has specialized marketing agents. Frase combines writing with SEO research, optimization, site analysis, and AI visibility. Simplified combines writing with social media, Brand Brain, Riley, and automation. Scalenut combines writing with SEO workflows, humanizing, brand monitoring, and marketing tools.
This matters when you compare prices. A cheaper writer can be the better choice if you only need text. A larger platform can make more sense when several of its tools replace other parts of your workflow.
It also means that I no longer judge these products only by asking, “Can it write a blog post?” I want to know whether the complete workflow actually helps.
Important: AI writing still needs human editing
This is where many beginners make a mistake. They generate a draft, copy it, publish it, and expect great results. I would not do that.
My own tests are another reason I do not recommend this approach. Even strong tools can produce generic text, strange wording, missing information, or results that simply do not match what I expected.
AI works better as part of the process. Use it for ideas, research, outlines, drafts, rewriting, and repetitive work. Then add real examples, screenshots, tests, facts, opinions, and final editing.

Which AI writing tool should you choose?
Start with the job, not the longest feature list.
Start by comparing Frase and Scalenut. Writesonic is also worth checking, especially after its next round of testing.
Jasper is the first platform I would examine because many of its newer features are built around specific marketing tasks.
Simplified is interesting because writing, social content, brand tools, and automation live in the same platform.
Do not automatically pay for a large SEO platform. A simpler tool such as Rytr may be enough.
Grammarly Pro or QuillBot may make more sense than buying another full AI writer.
Open the full reviews and look at the screenshots and actual outputs. The interface and workflow can matter as much as the feature list.

I would not use them that way. They can speed up research, planning, drafting, rewriting, and repetitive work, but useful content still needs fact-checking, judgment, real examples, and human editing.
Final verdict
The biggest lesson from my newer tests is that choosing an AI writing tool is no longer only about writing quality. You are often choosing a complete workflow.
Jasper makes more sense for marketing workflows. Frase and Scalenut are strong tools to compare for SEO-focused work. Simplified is interesting if you want many creator tools together. Rytr can still make more sense when simplicity matters. Writesonic remains in the comparison, but it is one of the tools I want to retest more deeply.
I will keep updating this hub as the older reviews go through the same deeper testing process. I would rather show where the evidence is strong and where more testing is needed than pretend every tool has been tested in exactly the same way.
